I Killed My Daughter..

Top post on IndiBlogger.in, the community of Indian Bloggers

Sita lay in the hospital bed, softly caressing her flat womb and watching the evening fade into unholy darkness. Tomorrow they would reap out her fragile daughter and she would do it without flinching; she would do it to please her husband and his family for she no longer had the will to fight.

The disgrace, the hatred, the burden of raising a daughter would kill her from within and she would not dishonour her husband by bearing him the hated thing. That night she dreamt of little girls, their shoulders slackened, their faces bruised and their clothes bloodied as they helplessly stretched out their hands asking her to protect them from horrors unknown to her.

The next day, they killed her child but all that mattered was the smile on his lips, the approval in his eyes at her fearless deed and the lost acceptance radiating from his face as she slowly emerged from unconsciousness, still haunted by dreams of screaming little girls she couldn't save.

  1. Oops the thought about female foeticide gives me the the horror, which I can never be able to sustain. It's a very unfortunate situation in which a mother was forced to kill her own portion, be it a girl child or boy, but then I feel bad about those fathers who actually forces this on them, in my opinion there should be the death sentence to those guys as well.

And to be very frank no women should ever stay in relationship with such guys who forces them to kill a baby girl... This is my personal opinion about it, don't know how much correct I am, but...

  6. A very poignant one Anushree. The practice in itself is such a horror and it seems so common also and people tend to accept it as a norm, without even flinching on the lines of sensitivity. I dont understand how such a system can still exist, even beyond the growth and development we claim! A very sad state of affairs :(

  10. Reminds me of that line from the Dictatorship - "So, are you having a boy or an abortion?". Unfortunately that joke is grim reality in so many parts of the world. A strange world indeed where men consciously try to reduce the number of women!

PS: The prompt was basically my name ;) but I couldn't have written anything better with that.
